Tyra Banks Sues Netflix Over Alleged Deceptive Editing in ANTM Doc

(MENAFN) Supermodel and television personality Tyra Banks has launched a defamation lawsuit against streaming giant Netflix, alleging the platform deliberately distorted her on-camera interview in a documentary scrutinising the troubled legacy of her reality television franchise America's Next Top Model, according to media reports.

Banks contends in the lawsuit that her remarks featured in the three-part documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model were "stripped of context and reassembled" to construct a "false and defamatory narrative," media reported Saturday.

The filing further alleges that Netflix employed "selective editing, deliberate omission, and surgical manipulation" to create the false impression that Banks had knowingly permitted a contestant to be sexually assaulted on set — and subsequently had no recollection of the incident.

"That narrative about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication," the lawsuit states.

Banks said she had agreed to take part in the documentary in good faith, believing the public warranted an honest and open reckoning with the show's complex legacy — encompassing both its cultural impact and its acknowledged shortcomings.

The lawsuit highlights a striking disparity between the length of Banks' interview and what ultimately made it to screen — just 16 minutes from a three-and-a-half-hour recorded session were included in the final cut.

According to the filing, producers manipulated Banks' responses to make it appear as though she was directly reacting to allegations put forward by former contestant Shandi Sullivan, who claimed in the documentary that she was assaulted during production of the show's second season.

"Ms. Banks respects Ms. Sullivan's perspective and the courage it takes for Ms. Sullivan and others to speak up," the suit states.

Netflix declined to comment on the lawsuit, according to media.

Banks is pursuing damages for a range of alleged losses, including harm to future business opportunities and lasting damage to her personal brand, though the filing stops short of specifying a monetary figure.

The former television host also claims her Sydney-based ice cream venture, SMiZE & DREAM, has suffered a measurable drop in online ratings since the documentary premiered on the platform.
